Science in Action!

Outreach work to inspire the next generation of scientists

Coordinated by Tiina Leinonen, our experienced Montessori-trained teacher/science enthusiasts/research technician, "Science in Action" is a collaboration between us and local primary schools to spark curiosity in science, to encourage kids asking questions and to solve problems. Tiina, the  team and other enthusiastic scientists volunteer their expertise and time to plan and deliver educational science workshops in KS2 classes. The sessions are based around Eleanor Williams' (CMD) excellent Wellcome-Trust funded activities. For example, children get to measure sugar contents in drinks and acidity/alkalinity levels in substances and used chromatography to identify "mystery powders" in order to discover who kidnapped Biggles The Teddy.

Rick Houston, Headteacher of Beckley CofE Primary School says: “The children have found working with practising scientists so much fun. They love the work and become completely absorbed in the investigations. They get to work with people who do science for a living and can picture themselves doing this one day, while learning important science knowledge and key skills. This is where we can instil a lifelong love of science and inspire the next generation of scientists!”

We are currently working with three local schools: Beckley Primary, St Frideswide Primary and St Christophers Primary.
